Cornwall Schools Projects
We ran a pilot project with five primary schools in South East Cornwall during 2015, and in 2016 St Martins school visited a cookery class and Pengellys Fishmongers.

This project enabled school groups to visit Looe harbour to explore the fishing industry and all the activities around catching local fish.

Each school was then be visited by a cookery tutor who will work with the children and their parents cooking dishes from the local seasonal fish. We use recipes from Seafish Fish is the Dish.

HILLFORT PRIMARY SCHOOL, LISKEARD

We arranged Looe Harbour visits and Cookery-"Fish is the dish" sessions with: Hillfort School, Liskeard; St Mellion and St Dominic, Tamar valley and St Cleer. Torpoint Primary School. Callington is also interested in taking part.

The first visit was made by 46 Year 3 children from Hillfort Primary school who visited Looe Harbour on 3 March. They toured the Fishing Harbour with the Harbour Master and leaders from Pengellys Fishmongers and Looe Fish Auction/Simply Fish.

The visit were very interesting and the children, teachers and parents learned about the Looe fishing industry, sustainable fishing methods and less well known sustainable fish.

The East Looe Town Trust welcomed the group to use the historic Guildhall, Council Chamber for their lunch time and gave a short explanation of the Guildhall. In the afternoon the school visited the RNLI station and the famous Looe banjo pier.

The children then tried their hand at some fish cookery on 19 and 20 March.They were shown differentfish; and learned that pollack, hake, mackerel, herring/kippers and clams are all sustainable fish from local waters. They also know where they are caught in the water.

The class made Star Fish Cakes and Smoked Mackerel Pate which they enjoyed tasting and sharing with parents and teachers at the end of school. Recipes to come!
